How do you know if what you’re doing is working for you?
I have always wondered; since most diseases take years to indicate they’ve been quietly destroying your health, how do you know whether what you’re doing is working to bring you health and healing. Being a vegan, vegetarian, meat eater, raw foodist, etc. is not guarantee that you’re actually healthy.
I know people who have fallen into each of these categories and I’ve thought, “Yup, they’re doing all the right things, they feel great, so they must be healthy.” Then bam, they’re diagnosed with and die of cancer, heart disease or from complications of diabetes, etc.
My puzzle was solved with just one word
Paul Nison posed the question last evening “How do you know if what you’re doing is working?” It’s not about how you’re feeling; it’s not necessarily that you’re vegan, raw foodist, etc. So if it’s not about how you’re feeling (in fact that was the last indicator on the list) then what is it.
Well when he asked this question I certainly leaned forward in my chair to hear the answer to it, because it’s a question that has puzzled me for many years now.
The number one, top of heap indicator that your health is at its optimum is…are you ready?…you’re not going to believe it…it’s SLEEP!
A true awakening
When I heard Paul’s answer to this mystery I did the ol’ one hand slap to the centre of my forehead. Having finally found an answer that makes so much sense to me is an experience that I can only compare it to a Spiritual awakening!
Sleep is such a problem for so many people in our society that finding the key to a night of deep, uninterrupted, restorative sleep has become a million, if not billion, dollar industry in and of itself.
It’s as much “when” you eat as it is “what” you eat
How you eat is certainly key to good health and of course living off of processed food is not going to provide you the nutrients your body requires for health and healing, not even close. Yet, I’ve found that most people sincerely believe they’re eating “healthy” when they eat fill their plate at their evening meal with meat, potatoes, cooked vegetables followed, on occasion perhaps, by something sweet.
I’ve been saying it for years now, especially to clients who want to lose weight, stop eating by at least 7:00 p.m. and to do their best to make lunch their main meal and have a lighter supper. Well I was so close with these two recommendations to solving what had puzzled me for years, “How do we know if what we’re doing is actually working for us?” that I’m a little embarrassed to admit I didn’t see the answer in my own advice.
How do you get the healing Z’s your body needs?
In order to achieve deep, restorative, healing sleep – which is when our body does its best repair work, restoring you to health each and every night, or at least trying to – don’t eat when it’s dark outside (or inside for that matter)! In other words, eat between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
There is an entire chemical process going on in your body that when the sun goes down and until it comes back up again your body is busy healing itself. I won’t get into how that magic happens, just know that doing these two things – oh and limiting your water/fluid intake early enough in the evening so that you don’t have to interrupt your sleep in order to visit the toilet in the middle of the night – you will quietly, without any effort on your part really, be allowing your body to do what it knows how to do, heal itself!
