With all the temptations and potential overindulgence of the holidays, here are our five favorite supplements to help get you back on track and …
- Reduce cravings. Avoiding temptations in the first place can be super empowering. By saying no to even one poor choice you’ve got something to pat yourself on the back over.
- Relieve the distress on your digestive system, which, by the way, is where more than 80% of your immune system exists.
- Recover and repair your liver from the toxins it’s trying to cope with as a result of the naughty choices that come with the festivities of the season.
Chromium works remarkably well for controlling cravings, especially the sugar and alcohol variety. Need I say more really? If you can avoid the desire to overindulge, you’re well on your way to avoiding feeling like dog doo-doo the next day.
I find this combo works best to thwart cravings if I start taking it several days before an event where temptation is sure to exist and then I continue taking it for at least a few days after I’ve indulged to keep withdrawal cravings in check .
#2 Glutathione (probably the best Nrf2 activator)
If you haven’t heard of Nrf2 activation before this minute, chances are you’re going to be hearing more and more about this cutting edge scientific discovery. For now, in a nutshell, activation of the Nrf2 system opens the door on your body’s ability to produce antioxidants AND release toxins.
If you want to learn more about Nrf2 activation in very simple laymen terms check out the book Grain Brain by Dr. David Perlmutter – pages 142-146.
I used to take 5 pumps of Quicksilver Scientific’s Etheric Delivery Glutathione under my tongue, but lately I’m having trouble finding it so I’ve switched to Kirkman’s Reduced L-Glutathione Lotion, which I apply 1 small scoop of to my skin in the morning and at bedtime.
#3 Milk Thistle (I can almost hear my liver give out a sigh of relief when I take this magical herb at bedtime)
Given the toxic world we find ourselves living in today our livers are bombarded at even the best of times so whenever I know I’ve veered even slightly off the straight and narrow path towards healthy choices I’m sure to take 3 capsules of a high quality Milk Thistle blend before even thinking about my head hitting the pillow at night. My favorite brand is Body Ecology’s Liv-Amend but there are lots of other great blends to choose from at your local health food store.
Probiotics are such huge players in balancing and improving your gut/digestive health and are something we take daily prior to meals.
They’re basically good bacteria strains, such as Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis, which are naturally found in fermented foods such as yogurt or sauerkraut. Their job, which they do magnificently, is to gobble up bad bacteria in the gut and intestines.
Considering so much of our food nowadays is processed and/or questionable in quality it’s especially important to add good probiotics to your health routine every day but especially when you know you’re going to indulge in foods you’re belly’s not exactly used to.
We like to pop two or three capsules in our mouths on our way out the door to a social function and then take another two or three at bedtime. Then, first thing in the morning, I’ll have a delicious glass of Lemon-Aide to help my liver flush out the toxins it’s worked all night to get rid of while I’m sleeping. You’ll find the recipe for this easy morning-after healing drink below.
I’m pretty old school when it comes to the probiotics I choose, I still prefer to buy ours from the cooler section of the health food store, versus choosing ones from the shelf that claim to have live bacteria. I look for products that contain a count of 50 or 60 billion live organisms. Personally I don’t bother with yogurt, since all of it’s pasteurized, which means all the good’s pretty much cooked out of it.
#5 Zeolite or Bentonite Clay
This works to absorb fresh toxins in the gut and honestly if you chose only one product to get you out of trouble throughout the holiday season this would be the one. Of course, it’s not going to directly support your liver or aid your digestive system, but it will bond with toxins in your GI track/gut for safe and effective removal PDQ, which indirectly takes the load off of your liver and digestion.
One thing you’ll want to be extra diligent about though is drinking plenty of clean water or else you can end up pretty bunged up and constipated – which certainly won’t help you eliminate those nasty toxins out of your bowels quickly and effectively.
We take HealthForce Nutritional’s ZeoForce capsules about a ½ hour after taking our other supplements in order for those supplements to have a chance to do their magic and not get swept up by the clay. I prefer taking capsules rather than fussing with the powdered forms of clay simply because I’m not a warrior when it comes to drinking down a glass of clay and water, but we do have the powdered form on hand for other uses, such as masks, foot soaks or detox baths.
There are several other methods of detoxification we use, such as coffee enemas and Far Infrared Saunas to help us sweat out the toxins. Bottom line is you want to assist your body in safely removing those naughty choices so you can feel nice.
Speaking of detoxing out the gunk, if you happen to live in the Calgary, Alberta area, check out our annual New Year’s Day Detox yoga class and join us as we guide you in blissfully twisting and squishing all those toxins from your internal organs through specific detox moves – you’ll enjoy a whole new kind of glow on!
LEMON-AIDE LIVER DETOX MORNING DRINK
Makes 1 serving
- 8 oz. Spring Water or Sparkling Mineral Water (not CO2 carbonated)
- 1 oz. Juice of ½ lemon
- 1 oz. Aloe Vera Juice (I prefer to use unflavored Aloe Vera juice)
- 1 tsp. Probiotics powder (open 2-3 capsules, empty contents into mixture and whisk in for best results)
Mix the above ingredients in a 10 oz glass.
It’s best to mix your Probiotics into this drink but you can also just take 2-3 capsules orally while drinking your Lemon-Aide.
