Raw Oatmeal by Patti Harris
1/4 cup almonds, soaked 8-12 hours (purified water)
1/2 cup raw oats, soaked 8-12 hours (purified water)
2 pitted dates soaked 8-12 hours in 1/2 cup purified water (reserve this water)
Cinnamon & nutmeg
Soak the almonds, oats and dates overnight in separate glass jars. Discard the soaking water and rinse the almonds and oats in purified water. In a blender, combine the almonds, oats and dates with the dates soak water. Blend until smooth. Add the banana, cinnamon and nutmeg and blend again. Eat right away with added fresh fruit and more cinnamon on top for added flavor.
Variations: Used 2 tablespoons soaked flax seeds in place of the almonds
& apples or another fruit in place of the banana.
Note: Finding raw oats can be a challenge. Apparently, whole raw oats turn rancid quite quickly, so the companies that supply it are steaming the oats after harvest. They steam it to”stabilize” the oats, but the steam reaches 212 degrees F and will destroy the enzymes. One way to check this is to try and sprout them, if they sprout then they are raw, if not, then they are steamed.
I have gotten some from Community Natural Foods that were raw, but mostly they are steamed. We had to order some raw ones from somewhere in Eastern Canada (probably harvested in Alberta). If you use the steamed oats, then just don’t indulge in this too often, but if you can find raw ones chow down, you will love it. You can also do this with other whole raw soaked grains such as barley, kamut, spelt or quinoa (if you use quinoa make sure you rinse it at least 5 x to make it taste better) although oats are the best.
